"not perfect, but very handy for older babies" 2008-10-06
By Sharon (Boston, MA)
I've been using this carrier for about three months with my son who is now 6 months old and weighs about 16 pounds.

The best features of this carrier are:

- the hip is the perfect position for a baby 4-6 months old, because it lets him see what you're doing and be involved, but places his increasing weight on your hip. Much more comfortable than a sling for long periods of time, and okay for a child who can't yet sit up on his own.

- it's very trim and can be easily stuffed into a diaper bag.

- very easy to put on (no adjusting, just click and go).

Room for improvement:

- the straps are almost IMPOSSIBLE to thread through the buckles. Take the time to get it just right when you receive it, and then never do it again!!! Because of this, it would be really hard for this carrier to be shared between two parents of different size.

- The body is very wide for a smaller baby. It would be great if there were elastic or a drawstring feature in the bottom of the body to narrow it for smaller babies. When my son was smaller, he would kind of slump forward because the body was bunched up around his tiny legs and he couldn't let them hang down out of the carrier.

- The straps are not padded (which make it very packable, but it can definitely get tiring on the shoulder after a while... my right shoulder often feels a bit pins and needley after wearing for a long time).

- It could use a POCKET!!

Note about the fabric: It is very stiff when you buy it, but after one wash it softened up significantly.

I would definitely recommend this carrier for older babies and toddlers who either aren't ready to be worn on the back (for this I HIGHLY recommend the Ergo), or when you want to wear them in a way that lets them see what you're doing and be involved.

"I *LOVE* My Mei Hip!" 2007-12-03
By E. Heller (Atlanta, GA)
We started out with a Baby Bjorn after my son was born that a relative gave us. It was fine for the first few months but, once he hit 17 lbs the shoulder pain was just out of control. We did a bunch of research online and found lots of positive reviews for the Ellaroo Mei Hip. I ordered it and have truly never looked back. It is so incredibly comfortable, even now when he is far heavier. (He is nearly a year old now.) All of the weight is down on my hip and I regularly walk the 3 mile path around the lake by my house with him on my hip with very little effort and no pain. It also packs so small & light that it is really easy to keep in the diaper bag and pull out whenever we get somewhere in the car. A great product!

 "Dissapointed" 2007-10-25
By M. Antonelli (New York)
I wanted a hip carrier for my 1 yr. old daughter who had outgrown her baby bjorn. She is petite for her age - 18lbs, 28 inches. I read all the reviews and decided to try the Mei Hip. Although the carrier is very well made, and the buckles are very secure, I did not like the fabric. I found it very stiff and unforgiving. It was like a cotton canvas material. I thought the Osaka pattern would be more muted or embroidered but it was a screened on print that was very bright and garish against the black. My daughter was very comfortable in it but I found the carrier very difficult to adjust. I would have to put her down, take it off and rethread the straps through the buckles and start the process of putting it on and her in it again. Once it was on, the waist strap cut into my hips no matter how I adjusted it and I found it difficult to spread the shoulder strap so it cupped my shoulder one handed. Once it was cupped around my shoulder, my right arm felt pinned to my side. After a short while, the circulation was being cut off and I was getting pins and needles in my arm and hand. I really wanted this carrier to work out but unfortunately it wasn't for me. I'm returning it today and the seller stated that there is a $5 restocking fee. On a positive note - if you really like this carrier, this seller has the best price and shipping on the web. Good luck!

 "Good Carrier" 2007-08-08
By C. Bensten
I have been pleased with this product primarily because it is easy to strap on in order to do quick errands instead of strapping Baby in the stroller. If your baby is not a cuddler, it might be a bit more challenging because she/he will be very close against you. It swivels from hip to front, which is helpful too.

"OK if you don't like to use your arms at all." 2008-10-01
By Heather L. Shaw (San Francisco Bay Area)
This carrier fastens on with a strap that goes around your hips and another one that goes from one top corner of the fabric (that the baby sits in) around your other shoulder, and over to the other top corner. You've got to keep that piece of fabric from twisting while you juggle your baby and fling it around behind your back, up over your shoulder (where it's supposed to cup comfortably) to fasten him on. The first few times are the worst, as you figure out the fit -- the fabric doesn't slide very easily through the plastic buckles (it's the buckles themselves that fasten together, at least), so it's hard to adjust the fit once it's on.

But, even once we had it adjusted just right (tight around my hips, enough slack in the shoulder strap for me and the baby), it never quite felt secure. As I wear my 10-month-old, he slips slowly downward. But the very worst part is the shoulder. In order for the shoulder fabric to stay put, you have to have it wrapped around the top of your arm as well as your shoulder. This essentially renders that arm useless, strapped to your side. Notice in the picture that it's the arm on the side with the baby that is up; that's because that other arm, were you to try and raise it, would displace the shoulder strap and send it sliding towards your neck.

I thought it might be good for shopping, but you'd be amazed at how much you use your arms while you're shopping. Since I like to be able to use my hands and arms while I wear my baby (isn't that the point of strapping him onto me instead of carrying him w/out a carrier?), I only use this one when I can't find the Bjorn.

I finally found a hip carrier I like: the Slingling. It's just one piece of slightly stretchy fabric, so it's very easy to put on and get the baby into. And, since you buy it in your own size (there are many many sizes for custom fits), there's never any adjusting. The shoulder on the Slingling is *stretchy* so there's actually some give when you move your arms around, and the fabric stays put MUCH better than with the Ellaroo. If you want a hip carrier (that also can be used as an infant cradle carry sling, no less!), the Slingling is MUCH better than the Ellaroo, IMO.

"Comfy & cute but poor fabric color quality" 2008-09-29
By Sookie (Arizona, USA)
I am torn as to how high to rate this product. I like the functionality of it, as it is way better than other hip carriers I have tried but the fabric faded after first wash - so it's still comfy and functional but it now looks like it's years old!

Pros:

>Comfy on shoulder, doesn't put a lot of pressure on your back or shoulder

Cons:

>After first wash (following care instructions) the black in the pattern and the edges of the straps all got splotchy white and faded

>Long straddle for the little ones (even my 10 month old daughter)

>Hard to get back strap on without twisting.

 "The perfect solution" 2008-06-30
By J. Feeney
I bought this product because I have a very fussy baby, approximately 9 months old, who never wants to be put down. This carrier is easy to put on by yourself and really does help distribute the weight. I would recommend this product to anyone who needs a little extra help carrying their baby around.

 "GREAT Carrier" 2008-04-12
By MAK (New York, NY)
I LOVE this hip carrier!!! I was saddened when my daughter outgrew the cradle and kangaroo positions of our sling and I wasn't comfortable with her in the hip carry position in a regular sling. She is very active, always turning, trying to jump and grab. I was afraid that a traditional sling didn't offer enough support. The baby bjorn offered a lot of support, but she either had to be facing out (and couldn't cuddle and fall asleep comfortably) or she had to be facing in and fussed because she couldn't see the world well enough when she was awake. This hip carrier was the perfect compromise. She can see everything. (I have gotten used to sitting a bit sideways so that she can face out and have a great view.) Then, when she gets sleepy, she can cuddle up to me and take a nap. I have heard some people complain about shoulder or back pain with these carriers, but I often carry my 20 pound daughter for hours in this and have never had back pain. As long as you make sure the fabric is spread out, it is incredibly comfortable. The only thing that was a bit tricky at first was putting it on. It took practice to be able to pull the strap around my back and over my shoulder so that is was flat, while supporting my daughter. But after a few days, I really got the hang of it. I HIGHLY recommend this. I have tried cheaper hip carriers and they dig into your shoulders and cause back pain. This one is worth every penny!!

**I just wanted to update this review to add that my daughter, who is a bit over a year STILL uses this from time to time. She is a bit on the light side (23 pounds) but it is still perfectly comfortable. (I'm not sure what the official weight limit is, but she still seems extremely secure in it. My husband even uses it now, since he has seen how much she loves it. We constantly keep this tucked in our stroller for the many times when my daughter has had enough of the stroller. (We walk around A LOT.) This thing has been a lifesaver for us!!! I think it is my favorite baby product!!

 "Not all that comfortable" 2009-11-12
By M. Voratut (Round Lake, IL)
It's a good idea and I'm sure it works for some people but this wasn't all that easy for me to use. Getting it on wasn't bad but trying to get my son in it wasn't easy. He was a bigger baby and he just didn't like how this felt. He didn't feel secure no matter how I wore it or what I did. It is well made and looks nice it just wasn't for us.

The Mumbai print is much more beautiful in person. The pinks are very pretty, fresh, and sophisticated with the dark brown and tan colors. I thought the print would be sort of sedate and not that fun, but it's actually very hip and cute.

 "Didn't work for us" 2006-12-24
By Green Mom (Portland, OR)
I bought this sling when my son was 8 months old and 19 pounds. He hated this carrier because he couldn't turn around and see the world. I hated this carrier because the rigid straps cut into my hips and shoulder every time he tried to move. The seller recommended making sure the straps were place correctly (I tried numerous positions. There isn't a place on your body where unforgiving straps are particularly comfortable) and also said to tighten the straps so the baby couldn't move around. I did all of these things and still found it very uncomfortable to wear. The seller was helpful and the product arrived promptly, so I gave it 2 stars instead of 1. There is a $5 return charge.

"Great carrier for holding baby close" 2009-09-15
By B. Walker (Richmond, VA)
I was looking for a carrier that would allow close contact with my daughter, but would also offer a good amount of support so I wouldn't feel it in my back or shoulders. The Mei Hip definitely suited that purpose. I was able to keep her close to me, and most of the weight was distributed on my hip, not my back or my shoulders. She also didn't seem to mind being in the carrier. I also have a Kelty Kangaroo, which she pretty much hates. The only drawback is that she does ride rather low in the carrier, and when she gets tired, she slouches even more. This causes her cheek to rub on the carrier, which caused a heat rash. I would definitely recommend this carrier, especially if you want to keep the baby close.

"Returned this on the day I received it!" 2009-08-10
By kebleo
I did a lot of research on hip carriers prior to buying this one and I was disappointed as soon as I opened the box. The first reason was because there weren't any instructions included...! I spent $80 and then had to go online to the manufacturer's own website and download them myself! VERY annoying. So, once I had the instructions, I got myself and my 7.5mo son ready for our first attempt and I could not get him into this comfortably. He started crying straight away and he just hated it. I think the major flaw is that the carrier is basically one big rectangle.. your baby's legs are meant to straddle this huge STRAIGHT seam, and all the fabric, and there was no way that he was going to be comfortable this way. Maybe this would work better for a larger baby/small toddler, but my 18lb son was just not going for this. I did manage to finally get the carrier on, and the shoulder 'cup' kept slipping off, and I am not a narrow-shouldered person so I'm not sure how this should work either. I returned this product the next day.

Since then, I've purchased a Playtex Hip Hammock and so far, so good! No tears, just a MUCH happier baby and mom!

"Short term solution - not enough value for the money" 2008-11-13
By JA (Avon, OH United States)
I was looking for a way to transport my 9-month old when I had drop off my 3 year old at preschool, but remain hands-free. This fit the bill for that, but definitely has some drawbacks. I had a hard time finding a comfortable position for me and my baby - she was always too low so her face was in my chest...I probably just need to spend more time on finding the right position. Once in though - it does allow you to be hands free which was my original goal. The other problem I think I'm about to run into is I live in Ohio and winter is coming...not sure how this is going to operate over a coat - and will probably need to keep adjusting depending on what coat I'm wearing... The other thing I'm starting to think is that when my baby is walking - not too far off, I probably wouldn't use this at all...So in the end, kind of an expensive item for short-term limited use.
