"OK if you don't like to use your arms at all." 2008-10-01
By Heather L. Shaw (San Francisco Bay Area)
This carrier fastens on with a strap that goes around your hips and another one that goes from one top corner of the fabric (that the baby sits in) around your other shoulder, and over to the other top corner. You've got to keep that piece of fabric from twisting while you juggle your baby and fling it around behind your back, up over your shoulder (where it's supposed to cup comfortably) to fasten him on. The first few times are the worst, as you figure out the fit -- the fabric doesn't slide very easily through the plastic buckles (it's the buckles themselves that fasten together, at least), so it's hard to adjust the fit once it's on.

But, even once we had it adjusted just right (tight around my hips, enough slack in the shoulder strap for me and the baby), it never quite felt secure. As I wear my 10-month-old, he slips slowly downward. But the very worst part is the shoulder. In order for the shoulder fabric to stay put, you have to have it wrapped around the top of your arm as well as your shoulder. This essentially renders that arm useless, strapped to your side. Notice in the picture that it's the arm on the side with the baby that is up; that's because that other arm, were you to try and raise it, would displace the shoulder strap and send it sliding towards your neck.

I thought it might be good for shopping, but you'd be amazed at how much you use your arms while you're shopping. Since I like to be able to use my hands and arms while I wear my baby (isn't that the point of strapping him onto me instead of carrying him w/out a carrier?), I only use this one when I can't find the Bjorn.

I finally found a hip carrier I like: the Slingling. It's just one piece of slightly stretchy fabric, so it's very easy to put on and get the baby into. And, since you buy it in your own size (there are many many sizes for custom fits), there's never any adjusting. The shoulder on the Slingling is *stretchy* so there's actually some give when you move your arms around, and the fabric stays put MUCH better than with the Ellaroo. If you want a hip carrier (that also can be used as an infant cradle carry sling, no less!), the Slingling is MUCH better than the Ellaroo, IMO.

"Comfy & cute but poor fabric color quality" 2008-09-29
By Sookie (Arizona, USA)
I am torn as to how high to rate this product. I like the functionality of it, as it is way better than other hip carriers I have tried but the fabric faded after first wash - so it's still comfy and functional but it now looks like it's years old!

Pros:

>Comfy on shoulder, doesn't put a lot of pressure on your back or shoulder

Cons:

>After first wash (following care instructions) the black in the pattern and the edges of the straps all got splotchy white and faded

>Long straddle for the little ones (even my 10 month old daughter)

>Hard to get back strap on without twisting.

 "The perfect solution" 2008-06-30
By J. Feeney
I bought this product because I have a very fussy baby, approximately 9 months old, who never wants to be put down. This carrier is easy to put on by yourself and really does help distribute the weight. I would recommend this product to anyone who needs a little extra help carrying their baby around.

sturdy material. A little uncomfortable for me but manageable. The supplier was extremely fast at shipping it out.

 "GREAT Carrier" 2008-04-12
By MAK (New York, NY)
I LOVE this hip carrier!!! I was saddened when my daughter outgrew the cradle and kangaroo positions of our sling and I wasn't comfortable with her in the hip carry position in a regular sling. She is very active, always turning, trying to jump and grab. I was afraid that a traditional sling didn't offer enough support. The baby bjorn offered a lot of support, but she either had to be facing out (and couldn't cuddle and fall asleep comfortably) or she had to be facing in and fussed because she couldn't see the world well enough when she was awake. This hip carrier was the perfect compromise. She can see everything. (I have gotten used to sitting a bit sideways so that she can face out and have a great view.) Then, when she gets sleepy, she can cuddle up to me and take a nap. I have heard some people complain about shoulder or back pain with these carriers, but I often carry my 20 pound daughter for hours in this and have never had back pain. As long as you make sure the fabric is spread out, it is incredibly comfortable. The only thing that was a bit tricky at first was putting it on. It took practice to be able to pull the strap around my back and over my shoulder so that is was flat, while supporting my daughter. But after a few days, I really got the hang of it. I HIGHLY recommend this. I have tried cheaper hip carriers and they dig into your shoulders and cause back pain. This one is worth every penny!!

**I just wanted to update this review to add that my daughter, who is a bit over a year STILL uses this from time to time. She is a bit on the light side (23 pounds) but it is still perfectly comfortable. (I'm not sure what the official weight limit is, but she still seems extremely secure in it. My husband even uses it now, since he has seen how much she loves it. We constantly keep this tucked in our stroller for the many times when my daughter has had enough of the stroller. (We walk around A LOT.) This thing has been a lifesaver for us!!! I think it is my favorite baby product!!
